NEW MODEL FOR STEWARDSHIP
NAU/EMA Partnership

The Ecological Monitoring & Assessment Program & Foundation is an innovative partnership between Northern Arizona University and Babbitt Ranches. It was established in 2002 by the Presidents of Northern Arizona University and Babbitt Ranches to institute a new model for resource stewardship.  The NAU/EMA partnership has united the research resources of a world-renowned environmental institution with the intimate knowledge of the land from a conservation-oriented ranching family. The relationship has provided the foundation for use-inspired research to understand and sustain the lands of the Southwest.

"One hundred years from now, someone looking back will know that this was a time when people began to 'Just Participate' with the environment, through a process of learning, understanding, and defining. They will know that people began to join, share and be a part of the ecological habitats in which they lived."
William Cordasco, President, Babbitt Ranches

"The Ecological Monitoring & Assessment Program enables Northern Arizona University to build upon its strength as a national leader in the ecological sciences."
John Haeger, President, Northern Arizona University

The land ethic simply enlarges the boundaries of the community to include soils, waters, plants, and animals, or collectively: the land.
