ANNUAL THEMATIC RESEARCH PROJECT - 2006

Invasive Plant Species: The Inventory and Distribution of Camelthorn

The 2006 annual research theme focused on the inventory and mapping of Camelthorn (Alhagi pseudoalhagi), an invasive weed that is spreading throughout in the Southwest. Recent infestations along the San Juan River corridor and the potential spread of this species poses a growing threat to the health and productivity of the ecologically important Colorado Plateau Region.  Thus, the early detection and response of this species is essential in decreasing this threat and protecting other non-infested reaches of the San Juan River as well as the Glen Canyon NRA and the Colorado River corridor in the Grand Canyon.

Many different river trips from several organizations participated in the San Juan River Basin Annual Thematic Program. Volunteers collecting data included participants from trips offered through NAU Outdoors, Grand Canyon Youth, and Outward Bound.
